Day 3: Haga Feels Like Home

Hej from Gothenburg! Today was our first full day in the city, and I’m in love. I woke up around 9, did my makeup, and headed across the street for breakfast.

This was my first experience with a European breakfast of any sort, and I have to admit, I’m a fan. I had toast with delicious raspberry jam, turkey, ham, cucumbers, red peppers, and a coffee cream. I had to go back for another piece of toast because the jam was so good.

I ran back upstairs to grab my coat and then we were off! Our guide and driver were wonderful. It was cool to see that our driver was a Frolunda fan as well, and it got me excited for our game on Thursday.

Our first stop of the day was the Fish Church, and it was so cute. In front, there was a pink wooden platform that I thought would be good for pictures, so I offered to take pictures for some of the girls.

JJ was kind enough to buy salmon for us to try, and I’ve never had fish so fresh in my life. I’ll go home and won’t be able to eat the salmon because it won’t be the same. I’ve been spoiled.
Next walking stop was the art museum and Poseidon statue. I really want to explore there during our free time next weekend, so it’s on my radar.

One of my favorite parts of the day was surprising though. I really enjoyed the drive down by the water. Our guide explained why an out-of-use crane is still there, and it really touched me. It’s meant to inspire their youth and symbolize making it through rough times. That really resonated with me.

The church overlooking Gothenburg was also a highlight. It’s astounding. The red of the roofs against the blue/grey overcast sky is striking. I got so many good photos with my camera, and I made Jackson take a basic travel photo with me.

Also, I really enjoyed the German Church. I am German, so it was special to see this connection, and the stained-glass work inside was beautiful. The church isn’t as big on the inside as it looks from outside, but they make the space count. I made sure to sign the travel book on the way out!
Finally, we stopped at the café with the cinnamon rolls, and I had the best lemon bar with raspberries and whipped cream that I’ve ever had in my life. Also, I had a vanilla latte, and the coffee is just better here.

When we had free time after, some of us walked to what ended up being an Arsenal bar, but we didn’t stay for long. After, Sarah and I stopped by a antique shop in the Haga, and I spent way too long looking at pins. I ended up buying 3 plus a flower picture. We also stopped by the chocolate shop that was recommended to us, and I bought my grandma some nice candies.

Daily Reflections

  1. Make friends! People are friendly and it gives you options.
  2. Yes, we’re dumb Americans, but we’re dumb as a team.
  3. Take time to soak in things. It’s too beautiful to rush.
